Hello Reader,
This Sunday, March 8 is International Women's Day. Fifteen years ago I wrote an article that reframed gender equality. This week, I revisited that article and even fifteen years later, I noticed - sadly - that not a lot has changed. So I wrote a new article.
If you identify as a woman, or a man who cares about women's rights, I encourage you to take a few minutes and read Rewriting the Gender Narrative on Medium.
It begins:
On this International Women’s Day, March 8, 2026, I want to pose a set of questions that have shaped my life and my work for three decades: When we speak of gender equality, what do we mean? Equal to what? Equal to whom? And at what cost?
This year’s United Nations theme — “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls” calls for the dismantling of structural barriers to equal justice. But before we can dismantle anything, we have to see clearly what we are looking at. And what I see, after years of working with women in leadership and transition, is a persistent and often invisible architecture of measurement, one that defines equality as sameness and then penalizes women for being who they are.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments. Just hit reply.
