Is It Spring Yet? On Thresholds, Storms, and Becoming

Hello Reader,

Is it spring yet?

I write this on a day when the sun is finally shining in the Algarve after months of rain, darkness and destructive winds. Yet, in the USA on the east coast they are dealing with white out conditions from a fierce storm. What is the saying? "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb."

It's intriguing to me that both conditions can exist at the same time in different places. I'm thinking of this as a metaphor. Can I experience sadness and grief and yet stand in gratitude? When I go to the cliffs on stormy even rainy days I still experience the awe that nature evokes in me even as I'm chilled. There is beauty in both sunshine and storms.

When we find ourselves at thresholds, we are both afraid and excited. Fear of loss or of the unknown or all the 'what ifs' that our mind generates. Yet, there is something energizing about knowing that something new and more aligned with who we are becoming awaits on the other side.

When my clients find themselves at the threshold I ask them to reframe their perspective from "I need to reinvent or lose or change everything to move ahead," to "I am now amplifying my life experience in service of aligning with who I am becoming." No psychic surgery required. Nothing is truly lost - it is transformed in service of a future where we can be truer to ourselves, more creative and expansive than we believed we could be, and from there powerfully serve what matters most at the time.

Today's Threshold Question

What part of me pushes against the container of my life so I can align and amplify in service of what holds meaning and purpose for me today?

The work I do with leaders on navigating identity evolution, reinvention, and conscious leadership transitions is to support that threshold space where transformation can occur. Learn more here.

Reminder

This Wednesday, February 25, we will hold our monthly Threshold conversation exploring this theme of Becoming using the three phases - Threshold, Unraveling, Returning - found in my book of poetry, Between Root and Sky. Click here to join us.

With care from a gradually warming and sunnier Algarve,

P.S. I'd love for you to explore your threshold and becoming on Wednesday at our Threshold Book and Poetry Circle. Please consider joining us. No performance, just sharing and honoring.
