"It is easy to be the person you have always been, for it requires no change, no self-reflection, and no growth. It may appear that changing yourself requires giving up something. In reality, there is no need to give up anything – you simply add to what has been.” Taro Gold in Open Your Mind, Open Your Life Hello Reader, As I sat at the computer to write, I drew a complete blank. At this point, I was not sure what would emerge. So I picked up a favorite inspirational book and opened to the quote above, knowing that wherever I opened up to, it would be the place to write about. And in reading the quote, I had to smile to myself. It’s about going to the edges of oneself and stepping outside that nice, comfy place one becomes accustomed to. I love the way the quote starts. “It is easy to be the person you have always been…” At least, it certainly appears easy to do so for long periods of time. But every once in a while, you get a jolt of current reality. And if you look closely enough, you may realize that indeed, it isn’t that easy at all. You are expending huge amounts of energy in your upkeep of someone you are not. And in the meantime, you have ignored or simply not become aware of, who you were becoming. Sometimes suddenly, sometimes slowly, your unhappiness and discomfort begins to assert itself. And it gets more difficult to tolerate where you are in your life. If you are being inauthentic you realize that there is a price to be paid and you are no longer willing or able to pay such a high price for being who you are no longer. “It requires no change, no self-reflection, no growth…” You are comfortable for long periods of time. You allow yourself to become numb and static; comfort in exchange for potential. How many times are you told by so many others that you should be afraid of reaching for your dreams? You may fail, you may get hurt, it could be so difficult, you might even succeed and then what? And then you may have to become the person you are. “It may appear that changing yourself requires giving up something…” In a tarot deck of cards, the most feared card is the Death card. That is what transitions may feel like. Stepping out of your nice, comfy zone feels like giving something up, something that you dare not let go of. It may feel as if a part of your being is dying. But indeed, the transition, like the Death card, is a representation of a change, of an evolution and if done with right intention, it moves you in a direction that brings you home to your core. “In reality, there is no need to give up anything – you simply add to what has been.” You may tend to polarize your situation: "If I get or do this, I must leave that." This is just not true. You can’t cut out a piece of your life as if it never existed. This psychic surgery is not what is called for. You step into the flow, into the natural movement of life. You AMPLIFY what is already there. To be the person you are becoming is to expand and retreat at the same time. In your external world you expand who you are by adding new dimensions to your life. In your internal world, you retreat to the beginning, to the essential Self, that dearly wants and needs to be acknowledged and expressed, perhaps in new ways that may at first be uncomfortable. To be fully authentic, at any and every given moment, is all that has ever really been required to be happy and to enjoy a fulfilling life. You will pay a price for living someone else’s life, when living your own big, perfect, beautiful life was all that you were meant to do.
